So as our last day ended we made our way to the airport via the Maglev fast train. We travelled at 300kms per hour and it took about 15 mins to get to the airport. It was a smooth and comfortable ride in the Maglev. It’s a magnetic Levelator so the train has a different track and runs on magnets.
On our last day we made the trip to the zoo with the goal to see the pandas. We took 2 trains to get to the zoo and the trains were very busy as it was a public holiday for the dragon boat festivals. It was also the warmest day with some sun shining through the smog and cloud at times.
When we arrived at the zoo it was great news when we found the train stopped at the zoo so it was a short walk. Inside the zoo we followed maps and signposts to find the pandas.
Winding our way around the zoo we saw pink flamingos, that were actually an orange peachy colour, emus, ostriches, a tiger, pumas, arctic wolves, eagles and the red pandas.
Finally we we found the two pandas. There in the middle of a high fenced area with glass walls for us to see through, the pandas lay on a wooden fought. Snoozing in the heat. It was hard to take a picture of them as there classic markings couldn’t be seen.
Today we went to the silk factory, there were so many parts to it, from silk worms, mulberry trees and diarrhoea to stretching, twisting and reeling all the silk. It was really interesting and we got to feel real and fake silk. We learned about the life cycle of a silk worm and was also interesting, because we learnt that when a male and a female make babies , the male dies immediately. Which is really weird.
We also saw the how the silk got pulled from the cocoon and turned around in a big wheel, to get the silk off they had to put them in hot water and there was a machine that pulled the cocoon and and untangled it into a big wheel of silk one cocoon can make a whole layer of silk.
After all the steps you have to stretch the silk to make like a doona, 10 cocoons stretched to a double bed doona. I helped to stretch a layer.
today we had to wake up really early, and get ready to go back to Shanghai. I really like Shanghai better than suzho, because suzho doesn’t really have good views of thing, and everything is broken. So I’m really excited to go back to Shanghai. We go on a bus with our tour guide which will take about 1-2 hours. I also like our tour guide because she is nice and she is funny. She would talk into a microphone at the front of the bus and give us a lot of facts about our destination. We are going back to the park hotel which is way better than the days hotel.p, because park hotel has better wifi to connect with friends and family, and Days hotel doesn’t.
Water Town is a very old town with many canals like Suzhou has many canals. There was a thunderstorm while we were there with loud thunder and then very heavy rain. Luckily we could stand under verandas and wait in the information centre. Many of us bought another umbrella but at $2 it wasn’t a problem.
We visited another beautiful garden before the storm. Then we walked along the canal and saw the pearl shops. Many farmers (pearl farmers) sell their pearls here. A man showed us where the pearls come from. So watch the video and you can see also.
Many students and teachers bought the pearls. If you paid 100Yuan you could buy an oyster and they would open it. The pearls were scooped out into a bag and you got to have all the pearls. I bought some pearl ear rings.
Today we had P.E and paper cutting with our sister school again, but today was way better than yesterday. Today we did Kung fu and paper cutting, in Kung fu we liked it way more than tai chi and we’re all very good at it, and the teacher seemed to know more English than yesterday’s teacher which made it easier and more fun. In paper cutting we made Christmas trees, pumpkins, lanterns, the happy character and we also got to design our own cuts, it was quite easy because we were getting the lesson from the English teacher. There are some photos and videos at the bottom you can see/watch.

Today we woke up early and went to our sister school. First all the fifty eight classes came out and we had to listen to the national anthem. Then we went into a gym and played table tennis and we did some games like we had to run around in a circle then the teacher would call out a number and we had to get in a group of that number. Then we did some Kung fu and practised that. Then the bell rang and we went and did some paper cutting. It was cool and hard then we had our lunch and went back home to the hotel.
Today we got picked up from our hotel again in the mini Van. When we arrived we put our bags down in the reception room again. Then we went to the music room and played one of the musical instuments. It was cool. We had picture with the music teacher.
Then we went to the morning assembly. After the assembly we went to the stadium where a a lot of kids were practicing volley ball. For our P.E lesson we did kungfu. It was cool, we learnt a whole lot of different moves.
Then we went to the paper cutting area were we made 4 different kinds of Chinese paper cutting. It looked amazing. We got to look at some art work that other kids in the school did, it all looked amazing. Then we went back to the reception room for a drink and to give our gifts. We gave the the school 4 books and 2 picture famed photos of our new school plan. For our school we received a scroll with Chinese characters. They also gave us more gifts, I got 2 bracelets and a picture of team China Epsom, Maggie and the vice principal Mrs. Shu. After that we went for lunch. The yogurt that we got was vanilla and it tasted amazing.
After lunch we went out to the play ground were we let off some steam. We also handed out some gifts to the kids of the school. I took a lot of photos with the school students. When we got to the mini Van we got Wonderfuls email and WeChat name too. Then we left the school. We had so much fun meeting new students and learning all about how they learn and what they do during the day.
Day 6: our sister school.
Today us Epsom girls jumped into a V.I.P mini bus, and headed off to our sister school. We made a lot of friends there, and they loved us. We participated in P.E and art, in P.E we did tai chi, Acacia did NOT like it at all, it had very swift and slow movements. In art we painted a type of different fruit in a basket, we painted with calligraphy brushes and ink. It was harder than it looks but we had some help by some very helpful students. The two ladies showing us around were called Maggie and Wonderful and four grade 6 students, were very helpful and we give them gifts, surprisingly they gave us gifts too, Chinese chess, chopsticks and a page of calligraphy. Every morning they would line up and march onto the soccer oval for an assembly, we were lucky enough to talk to them and introduce ourselves to them. We had a great day (except for the tai chi for Acacia) and we really enjoyed ourselves.
Thanks for reading, we’re having a great time.
