Calligraphy in 3/4S

Luke from our sister school sent us home with calligraphy ink and calligraphy paper. So we put it to good use, Skyping with Luke and the Calligraphy teacher in China. 3/4S were able to watch the teacher and have a go themselves. They found out there are many ways to write ‘Loong’ or dragon in Chinese Characters. The Team China kids came over to help as well, with Lach out the front modelling on the board and Jess, Mill and Jack helping the younger students with their grip of the brush and technique. A great lesson. Mr S was the official photographer and Ms Fitz just painted her new top! Thanks to everyone involved.

Ni hao 5/6F- Bon appetite!

Lach and I brought back some treats from China for our grade to experience a little tiny bit of China. The fun part was we had no idea what we were eating, all the ingredients were in Chinese and the boxes gave us no clues either! So we guessed! The kids were all open minded, had a go at everything and used the chopsticks Ms Fitz bartered for to eat their food. Mrs Mc also contributed a few goodies for our feast. I think the White Rabbit lollies were the favourites ๐Ÿ™‚ Ask Lach what his favourite food in China was- he answers “Maccas”. Lach!

Our final day in China! What an experience we’ve had! So privileged and lucky to be given this amazing opportunity. We took some time to reflect on our journey and appreciate this fast growing and immense city. I hope we recognise it when we come back one day- don’t go changing to quickly, Shanghai. Thanks for the memories and thanks to the 4 gorgeous kids who travelled with me and made my experience one to remember!

Last night in Shanghai

After the shopaholics finished bartering and dropped off all their goodies back at the hotel (notice the new Jack), we went for one last long walk to take in the beautiful and VERY busy, Shanghai. We made our way down to The Bund and indulged in ice cream. We missed the big red bus, so we had to hail a taxi….believe me, that’s an experience in itself! Jeepers!

Suzhuo sights

We’ll today was another big day. We left Shanghai and arrived in Suzhuo an hour and half later. The scale of everything here is enormous- the Chinese do big very well! Below in jumbled order are the highlights of today. I’ve also taken pictures of the housing, the high rise building are apartments, that it how the Chinese live. A lot of people calls for a lot of high rise buildings, it’s on a scale I’ve never seen before! I also took a pic of the traffic and the road rules- there don’t seem to be any. Did you know (this is info coming from our Chinese guy, Michael), that every minute there is a traffic accident in China and every 5 minutes someone dies in a traffic related accident. With pedestrians, scooters, bikes, taxis, buses AND a lack of road rules or adherence to them, that statistic is not surprising! I rode on the front seat and nearly had a heart attack with what I thought were near misses!
The Humble Administrators Garden was absolutely beautiful! We also cruised the canals, it’s just amazing to see how people live, it was beautiful too.
Lach was exhausted today, so he’s gone to bed very early to catch up on the sleep, he didn’t have much left today, poor kid! And Jack ate a fish eyeball, and I missed it! How adventurous, and gross, is that! Mill and Jess were like sticky rice and stuck together all day, just taking in the sights and taking lots of pictures. We’re quite into selfies! ๐Ÿ˜‰
We are off to visit our sister school, Weiting Experimental, tomorrow, so that should be interesting from a student perspective and a teacher perspective. Looking forward to it! Then Jess gets to visit Lucy her host sister and the the others are off to experience a Chinese Opera.

Night everyone, this is one weary but very lucky teacher ready for bed.

Welcome to Shanghai

Ni hao family and friends,

Firstly, we’d like to say to Millys family…..we have tried to Skype you, but no answer! So in case we don’t get a chance, here are some pics from our first day. We had such a full on day and with wifi trouble, we didn’t get a chance to blog. But the kids were very excited to talk to their families. It was lovely to see you all! Great to see the Epsom kids on the blog asking questions, and a few of Lachs friends have also been keeping in touch with him- thanks guys!
We tried our hand a bartering today, did I get some bargains! I was excellent at it (if I do say so myself), Lach and Jack were pretty happy with my efforts- check out the sunnies!
The Pearl Tower was pretty amazing, especially the glass bottom walk, took a bit of courage to get out there!
We had a great night walk after dinner, danced with the locals and had a fabulous night, I don’t think Shanghai sleeps! The Bund family (that’s our group) are a great bunch of kids and have embraced Shanghai! Feeling pretty proud.
Anyway, that’s all from me, I’m beat, seriously, it just took me 10 minutes to write this sentence….brain not working…need sleep! The kids are all sound asleep ready for tomorrow’s adventures. Until tomorrow, goodnight everyone.

-Ms Fitz

PS. G’day to Rob, Luke and Maggie too, my beautiful little family, I miss you!
